Pro ana is a term that represents a wide range of views. There internet represents 3 seperate pro-ana communities:
1. The first movement rejects the idea that anorexia and bulimia are eating disorders. This sub-culture is usually dominated by individuals who have not been officially diagnosed with eating disorders by the medical profession, and consider themselves self-proclaimed anorexics. Anorexia and bulimia are often personified. Some of these websites displays pseudo-religious overtones, and feature the "thin commandements" and "ana creed." 2. The second movement advocate eating disorder acceptance rather than active promotion of psychiatric illnesses. Threads such as "thinspiration" and "letters to ana and mia" are displayed in the majorities of these web communities, and they do not reject the idea of recovery. Support is not offered to individuals who attempt to develop eating disorders. 3. The last movement, sometimes referred to as the evolution of pro-ana, consists of information about eating disorders and support networks. Its primary objective is to give a voice to an often misunderstood group and to raise public awareness varios eating disorders. These websites do not encourage harmful behaviors by posting tips on how to avoid eating and/or purge food, instruct users how to hide eating disorders, or provide pictures of emaciated models as a form of encouragement. I believe "Pro-Ana Nation" falls into the 3rd movement; the evolution of pro-ana. The intention of the website is to provide information about eating disorders and offer users a place where they can connect emotionally with other sufferers. It also offers viewers a glimpse into my own personal battles with anorexia and bulimia. |
